The art work will now return home to Dublin, where it was created in 1913. 08 May 2008 - Irish Art Auction The annual auction of Irish art at Christie’s in London achieved sales totalling just over €2.5 million. Topping the sale was a painting by Nathaniel Hone which made €374,000. International director of Irish Art at Christie’s Bernard Williams said the auction had attracted "animated bidding". 03 May 2008 - New paintings from George Callaghan New contemporary paintings from George Callaghan will be featuring in Red Rag's upcoming Landscape Art Promotion which starts 18 May. The NMDC believes the British Government should reward prominent philanthropists with more honours and less tax, he argued. “We are less generous to donors than the Irish system”. Potential art donors were said to be deterred by off putting tax laws and ignorance of how to get involved 28 April 2008 - Arts Councils Agree Cooperation The two arts councils on the island of Ireland today agreed closer cooperation, including harmonising support for artists, strengthening arts organisations and bringing the best of Irish arts to audiences at home and abroad. Both arts councils agreed that supporting individual artists as a key priority and that artists do not recognise boundaries. The art exhibition attracts over 200 artists. To order or for further details contact the gallery 17 April 2008 - Belfast Art Exhibition A solo Irish art exhibition from Northern Ireland artist Jim McDonald opens tonight thursday 17April at the SqSpace Gallery, Belfast. McDonald has represented life in Belfast in a poignant way, focusing on street children, pub scenes and the city's shipyards from the bygone era. A set of commemorative Royal Mail stamps showing McDonald's paintings of the Titanic and the Nomadic will go on sale coinciding with the exhibition. The first-class stamps will be marking the 96th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic and will be the first in a series being rolled out every year until 2012, the centenary of the cruiser's tragic voyage. The exhibition will run until the 1st of May 16 April 2008 - Arts Forum The Arts Council of Northern Ireland is holding a forum today for arts organizations. Posing the uestion ‘Is there money in business for the arts?’ the event provides delegates with space to discuss ways of finding new sources of income for the arts and how to look beyond grant support to sponsorship opportunities with the business sector. The forum is being held in the Island Arts Centre, Lisburn and features key figures in the arts and business worlds. 14 April 2008 - New Director at National College of Art The National College of Art and Design in Dublin has announced that Derry-born Professor Declan McGonagle has been appointed as their new Director. McGonagle was a founding director of the Irish Museum of Modern Art in Kilmainham. Most recently he has been leading the major ‘Interface’ art and design project at the University of Ulster 12 April 2008 - New Paintings from artist Brian Smyth Irish artist Brian Smyth is participating in the latest art exhibition at Red Rag. John Morris was born in Dublin in 1958 and is primarily self taught. The love John Morris has for the Irish landscape with its constantly changing light and atmosphere is evident in his contemporary paintings. His paintings display a strong and confident use of brush strokes which successfully capture a sense of time and place.
