Painting: Stout Irish Men

’Stout Irish Men’ is a play on words, the men are perhaps overweight, strong of heart and reliable or drinking Irish stout beer. This is another example of George Callaghan’s playful and quirky sense of humour. A bar is peopled by almost identical flat-capped men portrayed in an almost two-dimensional and graphic style drinking identical pints of beer. The flatness of the style used in this mixed media painting and the uniformity of colour and shape suggest that it is to be taken at face value.

George Callaghan’s background as a designer is evident in ‘Stout Irish Men’. George Callaghan shows his originality. ‘I think style is something that evolves from your own personality and life experience. It’s not something anyone can teach you.’
